2020 School fees structure for all secondary schools in Kenya2021-2022 School fees structure for all secondary schools in Kenya

The Ministry of Education has released the new secondary school fees structure for the 2021-2022 academic year. It is a big sigh of relief for parents and guardians as the Ministry has announced reduced fees, in the new guidelines.

Learners in national and extra-county schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Thika and Nyeri will pay Ksh 45,000 per year; down from the Sh53,554 that they have been paying annually. This represents a reduction of Sh8,554.

On their part, learners in all other boarding schools including extra county schools that are located in other areas other than the town of Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret will now pay Sh35,000. These learners have been paying Sh40,535 per year. Consequently, their fees has been slashed by Sh5,535.

Students in special needs schools will pay ksh10,860 annually, down from the Sh12,790; that they have been formerly paying.

The new reduced fees structure takes effect from July 26, 2021, to March 4, 2022.

“The Ministry of Education has revised fees guidelines payable by parents.

Only learners in the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) will benefit from the government subsidy of Sh22,244 per year.

“It is the responsibility of the principal to ensure accuracy of the data available on National Education Management Information Systems(NEMIS), where every learner is fully registered on the platform,” says the latest circular from the Ministry.

Reason for fees waiver

The 2021-2022 academic year’s fees waiver is as a result of the reduced calendar; the Ministry explains. This follows the shortened academic calendar from 39 weeks to 30 weeks.
