The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) implemented a comprehensive medical cover to cater to students in public secondary schools.
Through the cover dubbed ‘Edu- Afya’, the government paid a premium of Sh1,350 per student targeting three million students who are in public secondary schools to fulfill the Big Four Agenda – provision of affordable health care.
Edu- Afya package was launched to enable students to access quality health services and thereby easing the burden from their parents and guardians. Thus, The Ministry of Education signed a contract with NHIF to provide medical Insurance for all public secondary schools for the duration of the study.
Your son or daughter has a comprehensive Health Cover for Public Secondary School Form 1- 4- by the Government of Kenya and NHIF.
The scheme covers essential outpatient and inpatient medical treatment on a comprehensive basis within the country and overseas for the student members. In addition, the cover provides for road and air evacuation, dental, optical, specialized services, group personal accident, group life, and last expense cover as defined in the contract.
They are covered in both Outpatient and In-patient- They can access foreign medical care, from INDIA or any other COUNTRY (Overseas Treatment) and you do not have to pay any cent. (Preauthorization required)
The inpatient Cover provides for comprehensive hospitalization (inpatient) to a member in an NHIF accredited hospital. This cover includes management of medical and surgical conditions where inpatient therapeutic services are required.
It includes hospital accommodation charges, hospitalization diagnostic services, daily consultation fees, nursing charges, drugs/medicines, dressings, diagnostics: imaging, laboratory or other medically necessary services, Rehabilitation services, In-patient physiotherapy.
Your Child can be admitted to Mater, Agha-khan, Nairobi or any other hospital and access specialists in that cover. The scope of cover also caters to dental Optical, Surgical, drug and substance abuse, health, and wellness education and among others.
The student cover was launched to ease parental healthcare responsibilities towards their children as well as meeting Kenya’s vision towards universal healthcare coverage.
Drugs and Substance – Rehabilitation Counselling are also in the Cover
You do not need to do Fundraising or WhatsApp Harambees – recently a student who incurred a bill of Kes. 10 million from Alliance was all paid-by the Ministry of education through Edu Afya cover.
Death – in an event a student dies – the parents are given Kes. 100,000 as last expense. If your Child died between 2018 (When the Cover was started) to 2022 you can still claim last expense – you only need to take Nemis number, Death and Birth certificates.
Personal Accident– if a child is involved in an accident, the student is supposed to be paid Kes. 400,000
Emergency Evacuation – You can get ambulances, air evacuation for that cover in case of a medical emergency. Contacts are provided to all school heads and administration.
Ensure your child has NEMIS No, and Head teacher has registered your son or daughter and they have the UPI (Unique Person Identifier) number and Student NHIF Number.
