ONJIKO HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Onjiko High school was originally started in 1930s by the African Inland Mission (now African Inland Church) as a Mission Primary School. In 1950s after the publication of Phelp’s Stoke Commission, it became a Junior Secondary School.

Later, following the Ominde Commission Report of 1964, the school was upgraded to a Modern Secondary School the same year. Onjiko High is located in Kakola Location, about 300 meteres from Ahero Junction Interchange along Kisumu-Nairobi Road and about 24 Kilometres East of Kisumu. Although, seated at an altitude of about 1160 metres above sea level within Kano Plains, fortunately the school is never adversely affected by the perennial floods.

The school has grown over time to its current status in terms of facilities, learners’ population and human resource workforce. The school offers fairly broad curriculum within 844 syllabus to its over 1000 students population distributed in 6(six) streams from Form One to Form Four.

The school takes prominence in providing life skills using interdepartmental approach to instill AIDS awareness and ensure career guidance from the time of subjects selection to University courses and career choices at the end of form four.

These important roles are coordinated jointly by Academics department, Careers department and Guidance and Counseling department. The school being one of the pioneering centers of learning in the country from the pre-colonial period until now close to a century, it has produced many cohorts spread across all productive sectors within and outside the country, they have contributed immensely to our society in many ways.
